A physical therapist is essential to rehabilitate optimally after surgery. They are also important when it comes to treating pain in the body, muscle or joint problems as well as balance issues. They are experts at strengthening and rehabilitating the body and use a combination of therapeutic exercise, modalities and manual therapy to improve your condition.
The plan of care is completely individualized, and varies greatly depending on your issue and your life situation. However, if an average was to be given, the most common plans of care range between 4-8 weeks.

Comfortable clothing. Proper identification. Insurance information. Referral from your doctor. If you have a report from imaging (x-rays, MRI, CT, etc.) then please bring this as well.
After you have filled out paperwork at the front desk, you will see your physical therapist. The first part of the evaluation is brief medical history and you will share what your problem is, and why you are coming to see them. Following this, they will evaluate you and ask you to perform different movements and tasks to get a full picture of your ailment. If there is time, treatment will be performed. You will then be prescribed a plan of care which usually includes a couple of home exercises, and be set up for follow up visits by the front desk staff.

At times, you can be sore after treatment. We do not try to make you sore, but there is also some discomfort that comes when trying to change things in the body. People respond differently to treatment and some experience more soreness than others. If you are too sore, treatment can be adapted to minimize risk. Treatment could also mean that you feel significantly better afterwards.
Sometimes the prescribed exercises can help with the soreness. Gentle movement is usually helpful. You can also try heat or ice on the area of discomfort.
Physical therapists use a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, education and modalities such as electrical stimulation or dry needling to make you feel better. They can also help you correct faulty movement patterns, help you walk better and improve ergonomics. Physical therapists often help you correct BPPV (benign dizziness) by performing maneuvers to reset the otoliths in your inner ear, which in turn decreases dizziness.
Yes, you need a referral from a physician, PA or APRN if you are Medicare eligible or are on any of the plans related to Medicare. However, if you are on a different insurance, you can be seen for 30 days by a physical therapist before you need a referral.
